Thank you @adoptwell for sharing this perspective on protecting a child's story:
"The importance of protecting my child's story wasn't something that ever occurred to me early on in our adoption journey. However, now I can see the importance of it. Whether you know a little or you know a lot, be very careful what you choose to share. Word travels fast in our world today. Once you say, blog, or post something; you can never take it back. Someday down the road, you don't want your child to find out something about herself from a family member or blog follower that she didn't even know yet. Whether it be drug exposure in utero, specific trauma that your child was exposed to, behavioral issues, information about birth parents, or more... Choose to remember 95% of the time, "it's not my story to tell." I'm not saying don't help others who are walking roads that you've walked. I'm only saying don't broadcast issues and facts that your child may someday wish you didn't. If a friend has confided any details of their adoption story with you, big or small, make sure you protect it with and for them. And if you ever feel the desire to pass it on, ask them before you do. Ask yourself before you share, "Is it my story to tell?" #adoptwell" ...
